Stress Evolution: From Safety Response to Health Wreck

Stress –the one word that is the cause of so many physical and mental illnesses today. Stress evolution, in the caveman, was designed to be felt by the body when the fight or flight response was activated. This caused the brain to signal the organs of the body to produce the stress hormones. What caused the brain form this stress response? The perception of a threat. During prehistoric times, this ‘fight or flight’ response was responsible for keeping the human species alive.

As long as stress is short-lived, it’s not harmful to the body. In fact, the stress response was responsible for saving lives. The body is designed to survive short periods of stress for emergency situations and to achieve certain physical feats.

It is not designed to thrive in a stressed state. When you feel the fight, freeze or flight sensations that come with negative emotional states – from worry and anxiety to anger and hurt – your body has put itself into a state of emergency. And when these states extend over a period of days, months and years, known as stress evolution, they take a destructive toll on the  body.

Here’s an overview of what happens inside your body when you’re stressed:

  • Heart-rate increases
  • Blood is pumped away from the organs to the extremities (to help with running away and fighting)
  • Digestive system minimizes or shuts down (digestion is not necessary in the short term for escaping a threat)
  • Healing is put on hold (it’s not necessary for escaping an imminent physical threat)
  • The prefrontal cortex of the brain becomes inactive (cognitive thinking is not necessary for running away from a wild animal or fighting off an attacker)
  • Stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol flood the bloodstream and have various effects on the cells of the body
  • The cells cease to function normally and are not picking up nutrients as they would normally in this emergency state

As you can see, living with an overactive stress response for decades is harmful to the physical body. Not to mention the reduction in the activity of the prefrontal cortex affects cognitive thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication and so much more. This naturally affects relationships, productivity at work, and the ability to resolve issues and problems.

Stress Evolution

The effects of stress vary from one person to another; but overall the effects are very harmful. The brain and body are designed to withstand (and even thrive) in short periods of stress. However, long-term ongoing high levels of stress can cause extreme damage.

Nowadays, the stress response isn’t just something that is picked up when there’s a threat to one’s physical life. Worrying, anxiety, panic attacks are all a part of stress evolution in our day to day living.

It’s important to note that stress is the body’s response to the mind’s perception of a threat. In other words: you experience something and your mind perceives that experience in a certain way that causes your brain to signal your body to go into a state of ‘fight or flight’. This is the stress response.

The body’s response is the same in the case of mental triggers as it is in the event of physical danger. What do we mean by mental triggers? Our perception of a threat. The records we hold in the subconscious mind determine whether something is considered a threat or not; and that will determine whether or not the brain signals the body to respond accordingly. However, now the stress response has evolved to not only include perceived physical threat, but mental and emotional threats as well.

For example, Angelina sees a cockroach on the floor and responds with fear. She feels frightened, her heart rate increases, she feels fear.

Now, Andrew, her husband, sees the same cockroach and feels no fear at all.

What’s the difference?

Angelina has a stress response to a record that is held in their subconscious that “proves” that cockroaches are a threat. This causes her brain to trigger the fight, freeze or flight response in her body, by flooding her bloodstream with stress chemicals.

Andrew, on the other hand, has no stress response to the record proving that cockroaches are a threat; therefore, his subconscious has no reason to cause the brain to trigger the emergency state.

Another example is, Angelina overhears Betsy, her neighbor, say something about her hair to Rachel, another neighbor, at a party and feels hurt, upset and sad.

Andrew hears Betsy say the same thing about his hair to Rachel, and does not feel hurt at all.

What’s the difference?

Angelina’s subconscious is referencing a record that “proves” that what was said is hurtful. As a result, the subconscious causes the brain to respond by putting the body into an emergency state.

Andrew, does not have this record. His subconscious has no reference that what was said is hurtful; therefore there is no reason for it to cause the brain to trigger the body to go into the stress state.

How to get rid of stress

Eutaptics tapping can help you get rid of the real cause of all your stress responses. This is because it clears away all subconscious records that are harmful to your wellbeing.

We want you to think about what usually triggers you to feel stressed. Suppose it’s paying your bills. Now take a deep breath, close your eyes, and think of paying your bills. Notice how you feel, what you see, and what you hear. Notice what the feeling is like – panic, anxiety, worry, nausea, pain etc. and where in your body you feel it, and how strong it is.

Now use the Eutaptics tapping technique to tap on this feeling and flip the memory or feeling. Now think about paying your bills again and notice what’s different. Has the feeling of panic changed in any way? Is the feeling different? Has the feeling moved position in your body, or has it changed in intensity? Just notice what’s still left there.

Now, repeat the Eutaptics tapping technique and keep going this until the feeling of stress has completely gone and has been replaced by a feeling of peace. Make sure you don’t stop until there is no trace of the stressed feelings at all and feel completely peaceful.

Do this with each thing that usually stresses you; and do it whenever you start to feel stressed. You will find that not only will you be able to get rid of the feelings of stress in the moment; but the things that used to cause you to feel stressed no longer produce that response in you.
